Delayed Justice: Governor Wes Moore’s Reason For Blocking Maryland’s Reparations Bill Is Contradictory

Governor Wes Moore said he vetoed Maryland’s Reparations bill because he wants to take “immediate action.” I 100 percent agree with him, regarding immediate action.

The contradiction: He said he plans to unveil his policies to address Racial Equity at Maryland’s General Assembly’s next session.

The problem is, the next session isn’t next week or even next month. The next session is not until next year, January of 2026. State legislators can only officially propose or introduce legislation between January -April.

He vetoed the bill because he wants immediate action, but wants to wait until next year to unveil his plans?

If he had signed the bill instead of vetoing it, the bill would have gone into immediate action this year, in 2025, while he prepares to unveil his Racial Equity plan for next year, in 2026.

Immediate action would be issuing executive orders or calling a “special session”, which would allow him to propose legislation now, without having to wait until next year.
