I. Introduction

The reason why it is important for Black people to acknlowdge that we live under the system of colonialism is because it specifies the solution. When one admits that Black people are living under a system of colonialism, then that changes the whole way we should end our struggle. History has shown that the only way to end colonialism, is to become independent from your colonizers.

This means, not trying to change the system from within, but becoming independent from the system and creating our own.

Even Ghandi who is internationally known as a man of peace, did not want to integrate into a system controlled by his oppressors. He wanted to form a independent nation for his people(Indians) that would be free from European rulership.

Malcolm X and Dr. King stated that Black America was a colony. We can all agree that Dr. King and Malcom X were two of the biggest spokesman in the Black community during the civil rights movement.

In 1966, Dr. King said “The Northern ghetto had become a type of colonial area. The colony was powerless because all important decisions affecting the community were made from the outside.”

A few years prior, Malcolm X put it more bluntly in his 1963, “The Ballot or The Bullet” speech

“The white man is too intelligent to let someone else come and gain control of the economy of his community. But you will let anybody come in and control the economy of your community, control the housing, control the education, control the jobs, control the businesses, under the pretext that you want to integrate. Nah, you’re out of your mind.”

“The man who is controlling the stores in our community is a man who doesn’t look like we do. He’s a man who doesn’t even live in the community. So you and I, even when we try and spend our money on the block where we live or the area where we live, we’re spending it with a man who, when the sun goes down, takes that basket full of money in another part of the town.”

There are many definitions of colonialism. Merriam Webster’s dictionary definition of colonialism, is “control by one
